Mangosteen is a small fruit about the size of a tangerine. The outside rind or pericarp is leathery with scars and scrapes. This outer rind helps protect a delicious inner pulp which has been described as the best tasting fruit on the planet. Mangosteens grow on small trees in and around Malaya, Thailand and Burma. The mangosteen fruit usually grows in clusters of 3 to 9 fruits and is dark purple in color. The mangosteen tree is a slow growing and small, typically between 20 ft to 82 Ft height and the tree only bears fruit twice a year.
Mangosteen has an extremely short shelf life and reacts very adversely to sudden changes in climate. Shipment -even by air, under refrigeration- has been unsuccessful in delivering it to the US in optimum natural shape. The canned variety fails to deliver the mangosteen's full flavor and inherent properties.
Apart from its much hyped medicinal benefits, its flavor is probably the most outstanding factor of the mangosteen fruit. It is really quite indescribable. It has been likened to vanilla, strawberry, peach, grapes and grapefruit.
